David Barrett

FAIA, Founder, Principal in Charge of Design

David Barrett’s life-long practice of architecture has created a legacy of sustainable design. When David founded his practice in 1977, his love of design was always coupled with an ethic of environmental stewardship. From large-scale master planning projects to the architecture of singular buildings, his designs offer a timeless connection to the unique places they inhabit and the people that inhabit them.

As Founding Principal and Design Director, the constant among David’s designs is “Living Architecture”: architecture that is inspired and informed by the patterns exhibited in the surrounding living and natural systems. Each project is initiated by a desire to discover and reveal a “soul”, or a “seed”, from which the architecture grows.

As his passion and expertise grew, David penned articles and gave lectures on green design throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. Locally, his visiting lectures at the University of Colorado’s College of Architecture and Planning continue to inspire architectural students.

Barrett Studio has been honored many times throughout David’s career, notably AIA Colorado Firm of the Year in 1998 and AIA Colorado Architect of the Year in 2002. In 2013, David was inducted in the AIA College of Fellows for his significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level.

David embodies the spirit and passion for design that Barrett Studio brings to each of its projects. He continues to instill these projects with a poetic vision of humanistic response and environmental calling.
